Port Houston Celebrates Record-Breaking Summer 2025
July 2025 marked one of the Texas port’s strongest performances ever, with container volumes surging 21% to reach a shocking 392,829 TEUs, compared to the same period last year. The port’s processed cargo volume to date has since reached 2,562,506 TEUs, the fastest growth rate in Houston’s history.
What makes these figures particularly significant is the growth across multiple sectors. Loaded imports increased 19% in July, representing the largest growth among the top five U.S. container ports. Loaded exports, primarily consisting of resins, grew by 18%.
As CEO Charlie Jenkins noted, “July’s volume performance reflects our Port’s commitment to providing a low-cost, high-service, low-risk gateway and demonstrates that our customers are trusting us with their cargo during these uncertain times.”
Beyond Containers: The Full Picture
While record cargo volumes grab headlines, Port Houston’s success extends across many cargo categories. General cargo volumes have risen 10% year-to-date through July, with steel imports in particular up 41% compared to July 2023 and 8% year-to-date, totaling 2,704,658 short tons.
Overall tonnage across public facilities increased 6% from the prior year.
Promoting this growth are strategic infrastructure investments such as the new Wharf 7 at Bayport Container Terminal, scheduled for completion in December. The new 1,000-foot berth will increase vessel capacity from four to five ships and significantly reduce anchor wait times.
The expanded capacity also means better accommodation for larger vessels, with the port now able to handle ships up to 17,000 TEUs at Bayport Terminal following the completion of the Project 11 dredging.
Sustainability Meets Growth
Perhaps most notably, the Port of Houston supports environmental responsibility. The Houston Ship Channel Expansion (Project 11) recently received the Environmental Excellence Award from the Western Dredging Association for its innovative design. The project repurposed nearly all dredged material to create wildlife habitats while simultaneously expanding operational capacity.
“Project 11 is helping ensure the nation’s number one waterway expands responsibly and remains one of the most important economic corridors in the world,” Jenkins explained. “This award underscores our view that growth and sustainability can work hand in hand.”
