Terminal Logistics: What You Need to Know

Pre-Cruise Planning and Documentation

Getting your documents ready is important for a smooth boarding process—but don’t worry, if you prepare ahead, it’s simpler than you think!

Documentation Requirements: Here’s what you need to know to breeze through check-in:

  • Passports: Bring a valid passport when going on a cruise, including those returning to U.S. ports.
    • Remember passports can anywhere from 6 to 10 weeks to be processed and shipped (Expedited service and shipping may be available by request for a substantial extra fee).
    • Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your return date—this is crucial!
  • Closed-Loop Cruises: Some cruises departing and returning to the same U.S. port may accept a certified birth certificate plus government-issued photo ID, depending on the requirements of the destination countries.
    • Emergencies happen and requirements can change without notice—bringing your passport eliminates this major source of stress and complications!
  • Children’s Documentation: Kids need their own passports or birth certificates too. If you’re traveling with children without their parent(s), bring notarized consent letters from the parent(s) or legal guardian.
  • Special Circumstances: Naturalized citizens should bring certificates of naturalization as backup documentation. Green card holders need both green cards, and passports from their country of citizenship.

Health Documentation: Some tropical destinations require vaccination records or health certificates, so research requirements for all ports on your itinerary well in advance.

Travel Insurance: Consider comprehensive travel insurance that covers cruise-specific issues like missed connections, medical events, weather events, or other trip interruptions.

Before You Board:

  • Do a little homework! Research your cruise line’s safety record and recent incidents. The CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program provides inspection reports for cruise ships, offering insights into cleanliness and safety standards.

Arrival Timing and Transportation

Getting to Galveston is part of the adventure! Here’s how to make it smooth and stress-free:

Flying Into Houston:

  • Bush Intercontinental (IAH): Approx. 75-90 min. drive at peak travel times.
  • Hobby Airport (HOU): Approx. 1 hr. drive, preferred for domestic flights.
  • Ground Transportation: Shuttles cost around $30-60 per person each way, offers group rates. Uber/Lyft typically costs $60-100, depending on demand.

Driving to Galveston: Road trip time!

  • ALWAYS check your route before you leave AND the day before!
  • Traffic/Weather Considerations: Houston traffic can be intense, so leave extra time, especially during weekday rush hours (7-9 AM, 4-7 PM). Texas weather, especially near the coast, can be unpredictable as well.

Arrival Day Strategy:

  • Hotel Night Before: Many passengers stay in Galveston the night before to avoid travel stress and start their vacation early.
  • Same-Day Arrival: If you’re flying in on cruise day, book morning flights with 4+ hour buffers. Afternoon flights are risky and could mean missing your ship!
  • Check-in Times: Most cruise lines assign specific 2-hour check-in windows. Arriving early won’t speed up boarding, so relax and arrive during your designated time.

Accommodations:

Want to start your trip early/stay later? Staying in Galveston the night is a fantastic way to beat the stress and get into vacation mode!
