Cruise Privacy Scandal: Twelve More Passengers Join Lawsuit Against Royal Caribbean for Hidden Camera Incident
Twelve additional passengers have now joined a lawsuit against Royal Caribbean cruise line, alleging a gross violation of privacy after a former stateroom attendant, Mr. Arvin Marisol, was convicted of placing hidden cameras in bathrooms aboard the M/V Symphony of the Seas.
Arvin Joseph Mirasol was sentenced to 30 years in prison last year after pleading guilty to charges of video voyeurism and possession of illegal images. Investigations revealed that at least 1000 individuals—both adults and minors—were unknowingly recorded during their vacations from December 1st, 2023 to February 26th, 2024. This has prompted calls for better hiring practices and accountability.
Allegations Against Royal Caribbean
Filed by a Miami-based law firm Lipcon, Marguiles & Winkleman, the lawsuit accuses Royal Caribbean of failing to conduct adequate background checks and neglecting proper oversight of its staff. Attorneys representing the victims argue that the cruise line’s lax hiring protocols enabled such an invasion of privacy.
For the victims, the impact extends far beyond the courtroom. The knowledge that their private moments were recorded without consent has left many with lingering feelings of betrayal and distress. One plaintiff described the ordeal as “a complete violation of my humanity,” while others have expressed fears about traveling or trusting hospitality staff again.
In light of this incident, passenger advocacy organizations are pushing for stronger regulatory oversight of cruise lines. Proposed measures include mandatory background checks for all crew members, routine inspections for hidden recording devices, and stricter penalties for corporate negligence.
