Cruising Comeback: Port Miami and Port Everglades Shatter Records in 2024
The cruise industry is experiencing a resurgence, led by the busy Florida cruise terminals of Port Miami and Port Everglades. Both Florida ports have reported record-breaking passenger numbers for fiscal year (FY) 2024, highlighting the pent-up demand for cruising as vacationers return to the high seas.
Port Miami: The Reigning “Cruise Capital of the World”
Port Miami has long maintained its title as the nation’s busiest cruise port, hosting 8.2 million cruise passengers during 2024. Demand has rebounded rapidly post-pandemic, with 2024 marking a 12.79% increase from its previous record. With a varied mix of cruise lines– like Virgin Voyages, Norwegian Cruise Line, and MSC Cruises setting sail from its terminals– the port remains a centerpiece of global cruising.
The momentum shows no signs of slowing. For the 2024-2025 season, Port Miami is gearing up to debut several new ships, including luxurious destinations from Explora Journeys and new, innovative vessels from MSC Cruises. Notably, MSC’s upcoming Cruise Terminal AA is poised to claim the title of the world’s largest cruise terminal, a testament to the port’s ambitious expansion plans.
Adding to its forward-thinking approach, Port Miami launched its shore power project in June, enabling docked ships to plug into landside electrical power. This groundbreaking initiative not only reduces emissions and noise pollution but also underscores the port’s commitment to sustainability.
Port Everglades: A Port on the Rise
Not to be outdone, Port Everglades in Broward County celebrated its own milestone, welcoming over 4 million cruise passengers—a 39% increase from the prior year. This was achieved with just 648 cruise ship calls, reflecting the growing size and efficiency of modern ships.
“Cruising is in high demand, and our cruise line partners are poised for greater gains, with new itineraries and a variety of sailing dates,” said Joseph Morris, CEO and Port Director of Port Everglades.
These record achievements position the cruise industry for a bright future, with both Port Miami and Port Everglades redefining success in the industry. The consumer appetite for travel and adventure remains insatiable: utilizing what is marketed as state-of-the-art technology, an expanded roster of ships and itineraries, and new environmental sustainability initiatives, the future looks promising for these ports and their cruise line partners.
But cruises can be dangerous too, so always be aware and stay safe!
